1958: Gay Rights Organization Founded

The Mattachine Society of Philadelphia, the city’s first gay rights organization and part of a national entity, was founded to advocate for LGBTQIA+ rights.

1965: Annual Reminders Sit In

From 1965 to 1969, Philadelphia hosted the “Annual Reminders,” one of the U.S.’s first gay rights protests at Independence Hall, advocating against LGBTQIA+ discrimination.

1969: Gay Liberation Front Founded

Following the Stonewall riots in New York City, the Gay Liberation Front was established, focusing on LGBTQIA+ rights and activism.

1972: Philadelphia's First Pride March

On June 11, 1972, Rittenhouse Square, the then-center of gay life in Philadelphia, witnessed the city’s inaugural Gay Pride Parade. 10,000+ individuals participated in the event, orchestrated by the Gay Activists Alliance, the Homophile Action League, along with contingents from Penn State and Temple University.

1974: First Gay Community Center Opened
